Frequently Asked Questions Regarding: LASIK Procedure
What is LASIK?LASIK is a surgical procedure to correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. It involves raising a flap on the cornea, shaping the cornea with a cool laser, and replacing the flap. The goal of LASIK is to reduce or eliminate your need for glasses or contact lenses. I only need glasses to read. Will LASIK help? No. LASIK will only eliminate your need for glasses for distance vision. If you have good distance vision, but only need glasses to read you have presbyopia and are not a candidate for LASIK. How good will my vision be right after the procedure? You experience your new vision immediately after the procedure but it will be a little hazy. The next day patients have "good" vision, not necessarily 20/20 but sufficient to drive. It will gradually improve and a final result is seen after several weeks. Does it hurt?A lid speculum is used to hold open the eyelids. This can be a little uncomfortable but certainly not painful. The laser surgery itself is painless due to anesthetic eyedrops. Will I have pain after the procedure?Patients generally do not have pain after the procedure, but some experience dry eye symptoms for several weeks. We recommend routine use of artificial tears which help minimize those symptoms. What are the possible side effects of LASIK?Dry eyes are a common but treatable side effect of LASIK which diminishes with time. Some people see halos around lights at night, but this can go away with time. When it persists, most patients find it noticable but not disabling or distracting. Is LASIK a permanent procedure?Yes. Most patients have very good results after the initial procedure. Enhancements may be necessary to "fine tune" your vision and are done at no additional cost. Enhancements, if necessary, are done within the first year after surgery and are generally needed 10 to 15% of the time. Am I a candidate for LASIK surgery? If you have nearsightedness, astigmatism, or hyperopia that is correctable with glasses or contact lenses, and if your eyewear prescription hasn't changed for at least one year, you may benefit from refractive surgery. Candidates should have healthy eyes, be in good general health, be at least 20 years of age, and should not be pregnant or nursing. The laser does not treat presbyopia. Further evaluation during your free screening will help determine candidacy. What if I move my eye during the procedure? Will the results be affected? No. Our laser uses a modern eye tracking system so the computer controlling the laser can correct for any movement of your eye. |
