Overview

Dr. G. Brock Magruder

Dr Magruder PictureDr. G. Brock Magruder has been practicing ophthalmology in Orlando, Florida since 1963. Born and raised in Orlando, Dr. Magruder graduated from the Emory University School of Medicine in 1956 and then completed a three-year residency at New York Hospital Cornell University Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Magruder founded the Magruder Eye Institute and specializes in intraocular lens implant cataract surgery. He is a member of the American College of Eye Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Eye Surgery.

Dr. Magruder is an established leader in medicine and ophthalmology in Orlando and the State of Florida. He was the founder and first President of the Central Florida Society of Ophthalmology. Other positions Dr. Magruder has held in the medical community include President of the Florida Society of Ophthalmology and Chairman of the Florida Society for the Prevention of Blindness.

Dr. Magruder was also Chief of Ophthalmology and Chief of the Medical Staff at Holiday Hospital in Orlando, as well as Chief of Ophthalmology and President of the Medical Staff at Orlando Regional Health Center. He also held the position of Chairman of the Board of the Medical Eye Bank of Florida. Dr. Magruder currently serves on the board of the Crummer School of Business of Rollins College in Winter Park and as President of the Chesley G. Magruder Foundation in Central Florida.

Dr. John T. Lehr

Dr Lehr Dr. John Lehr began his medical training at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine where he earned his MD degree with research distinction in 1983. After completing a year of internship in internal medicine at The Mount Sinai Medical Center, he went on to complete his three year ophthalmology residency at the famed New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in New York City; one of the oldest ophthalmology teaching programs in the western hemisphere. He then followed in the footsteps of his mentors. Dr. Lehr went on to complete an additional two accredited years of specialized training and education focused on the diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas under the guidance of Dr. Alice McPherson.
Dr. Lehr was eager to return back to his home state of Florida to join the Magruder Eye Institute in 1993. He developed the retina department, molding it into one of the most recognized retina departments in Central Florida. He has continued to pursue the leading edge of retina technology and surgery. He specializes in retinal detachment repair, diabetic retinopathy, macular diseases, uveitis, and is one of only a few retinal trained ROP laser specialists treating many of the premature babies at both the Arnold and Winnie Palmer Hospitals and Florida Hospital Neonatal intensive care units.
The department utilizes the most advanced technology including digital fluorescein angiography, Optical Coherence Topography, Photodynamic Therapy and the newest innovation in laser delivery system, the Pascal laser. Within the last three years, Dr. Lehr has taken the department   to the highest level yet by becoming the Principal Investigator for four new clinical trials for the development of new therapies for macular degeneration and vascular diseases of the retina and vitreous which are two of the leading causes of blindness in our country.
Dr. Lehr has a wonderful wife, Katie and two children, Hayden and Charlie, who keep him quite occupied and constantly amazed. He has served on many advisory boards and presently is a board member of the Hamilton Holt School of Rollins College. He is on the active staff of Florida Hospital Systems and the Orlando Regional Health Care systems and is Medical Director of  Lakeside Surgery Center.

Dr. Kelly Herschel

Dr HerschelDr. Kelly Herschel brings a wealth of knowledge and an impressive diversity of skills to The Magruder Eye Institute with subspecialty training in three different areas of ophthalmology; cornea, refractive surgery, and oculoplastics.

After graduating magna cum laude from Vanderbilt University in math and physics, Dr. Herschel went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma and did his residency at the Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation in New Orleans, where in his senior year, he served as chief resident. Thereafter, Dr. Herschel continued his training and completed a two-year cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery fellowship at the Louisiana State University Eye Center in New Orleans. As chief fellow at the Louisiana State University Eye Center, Dr. Herschel coordinated the stage III FDA trials on myopic photorefractive keratotomy ("PRK") and later, hyperopic PRK. Subsequently, Dr. Herschel joined a prestigious practice in Dallas where he perfected his surgical skills and began performing Lasik procedures after the FDA approval of PRK in 1996. Prior to joining The Magruder Eye Institute, Dr. Herschel, completed a third fellowship in oculoplastic surgery at Beraja Eye Institute in Miami.

Dr. Herschel is board certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Medical Association. Dr. Herschel joined The Magruder Eye Institute in the year 2000. He practices general ophthalmology while specializing in cataract and complex corneal surgery, comprehensive refractive surgery and oculoplastic problems.    He continues to incorporate new and exciting technologies into his practice including multifocal IOLs, high contrast implants, custom lasik and  DSEK.

Dr. Ivan Tarle

Dr Tarle PictureDr. Ivan Tarle joined the Magruder Eye Institute in August 2001.  He attended Washington University School of Medicine where he earned both a Medical Degree and a PhD Degree in Biochemistry.  Following residencies at the University of Tennessee and the University of South Florida, Dr. Tarle completed a prestigious Oculoplastics Fellowship at the University of Cincinnati.  He is a board certified Ophthalmologist. 

Dr. Tarle’s expertise is in the fields of Oculoplastics, General Ophthalmology and Aesthetics.   He performs exclusively cosmetic and reconstructive procedures around the eyes, face and head.  These include eyelid and facial surgery, threadlift for facial rejuvenation, eyelid skin cancer resection and reconstruction, tearing problems and orbital surgery.  These procedures address such problems as drooping eyelids, sagging brows and wrinkles around the eyes as well as minimally invasive forehead lifts and face lifts.  He also performs in-office procedures including Botox injections.
 
Dr. Tarle is on active staff at the Orlando Regional Healthcare System, Florida Hospital, and Lakeside Surgery Center.  He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Florida Society of Ophthalmology.  Dr. Tarle served as Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Dr. Michael E. Pohlod

Dr PohlodDr. Michael E. Pohlod graduated with distinction from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.  He received his medical degree in 1990 from Tulane University School f Medicine.  He began his ophthalmic training at Portsmouth Naval Hospital and Ochsner Hospital where he received meritorious commendation awards and was made chief resident. 
            Dr. Pohlod joined Magruder Eye Institute in 1998 where he practices general ophthalmology, including cataract and implant surgery, anterior segment, laser and eyelid surgery.  He is also affiliated with Orlando Regional Healthcare System, Florida Hospital, Winter Park Memorial Hospital as well as Lakeside Surgery Center.  Dr. Pohlod has actively participated in several clinical research studies and has written articles for publications. 
            Dr. Pohlod currently resides in Winter Park, Fl.

Dr. Nader Moinfar

Dr Moinfar PictureDr. Nader Moinfar, MD is an ophthalmologist specializing in diseases and surgery of the retina, vitreous and macula, including inflammation and uveitis. He takes care of both adults and children with retinal problems.

Dr. Moinfar is an honors graduate of Georgetown University and the Medical College of Virginia. His ophthalmology training was completed with distinction at Georgetown University Medical Center, followed by two years of retina fellowship training at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Moinfar was also a research fellow at the National Institutes of Health. While in California, Dr. Moinfar served on the faculty of the medical school and as attending surgeon at Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was also an investigator on numerous national and international clinical trials to advance the treatment of retinal diseases. These studies included new oral medications for diabetic retinopathy, photodynamic therapy of macular degeneration and new medications for infections of the retina. He continues to bring the most advanced and promising therapies to his patients at the Magruder Eye Institute. These include office repair of retinal detachments, photodynamic therapy for age related macular degeneration, and surgery of complex retinal detachments, including retinopathy of prematurity.

Dr. Michael P. Graham

Dr GrahamDr. Michael P. Graham graduated with distinction from the University of Virginia, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology and chemistry. While at the University of Virginia, he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He received his medical degree with distinction in research from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. While in medical school he was involved in research at Cold Spring Harbor laboratories. After his internship in Internal Medicine at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, New York, he completed his residency at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Syracuse.

Dr. Graham brings to the Magruder Eye Institute outstanding credentials and a strong personal commitment to caring for his patients. He practices general ophthalmology, cataract and implant surgery, laser, and anterior segment surgery. He is involved in clinical research with advanced technology intraocular lenses. Dr. Graham, along with his colleagues at the Institute, is involved in various areas of community service and belongs to several professional organizations including: the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the American Medical Association and the Florida Society of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Graham and his wife Celia live in Winter Park with their sons Joshua and Drew.

Dr. John A. Beneke

Dr Beneke PictureDr. John Beneke is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, and graduated with honors from the University of Nebraska Medical School.  He received his ophthalmology training at the University of Tennessee followed by a glaucoma fellowship at the University of Florida.  He did his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Tennessee where, in his senior year, he served as chief resident.
His fields of expertise are in the treatment of glaucoma and cataracts.  He is trained in the latest diagnostic and surgical treatments for glaucoma, and is performing the most up-to-date procedures in multifocal intraocular lense implants for patients undergoing cataract surgery.    
Dr. Beneke is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and maintains active membership in the American Academy of Ophthalmology.            
He currently resides in Winter Park, Florida with his wife, Darlene and two daughters, Alice and Grace.

Dr. Donald Centner

Dr. Donald CentnerDr. Donald J. Centner brings a vast array of experience to the Magruder Eye Institute. He completed undergraduate studies at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He continued his medical education by completing an internship in Internal Medicine at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. Dr. Centner completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the national Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where he served as Chief Resident.

Dr. Centner’s naval career began many years before his medical career. Prior to attending medical school, he served as a Naval Aviator including duties as a patrol plane and mission commander and as a flight instructor. During this time, he was deployed overseas and flew hundreds of missions in support of cold war antisubmarine operations. After attending medical school, he returned to active duty as a navy pilot and flight surgeon flying numerous missions during Operation Desert Shield/Storm.

He then completed Ophthalmology residency training. Prior to joining the Magruder Eye Institute, Dr. Centner served as a comprehensive ophthalmologist and as the Ophthalmology Department Head at the naval hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. After nearly 30 years of military service, he recently retired from the U.S. Navy at the rank of Captain.

Donald J. Centner, M.D. practices general Ophthalmology and is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

He is married and has twin daughters. Dr. Centner is a welcome addition to the Magruder Eye Institute
