Dr. John Lehr began his medical training at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine where he earned his MD degree with research distinction in 1983. After completing an internal medicine internship at The Mount Sinai Medical Center, he went on to complete his three year ophthalmology residency at the famed New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in New York City.
He then followed in the footsteps of his mentors. Dr. Lehr went on to complete an additional two accredited years of specialized training and education focused on the diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas under the guidance of Dr. Alice McPherson.
Dr. Lehr was eager to return back to his home state of Florida to join the Magruder Eye Institute in 1993. He developed the retina department, molding it into one of the most recognized retina departments in Central Florida. He has continued to pursue the leading edge of retina technology and surgery. He specializes in retinal detachment repair, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration , uveitis, and is one of only a few retinal trained ROP laser specialists treating the premature babies at Winnie Palmer Hospital and Florida Hospital Neonatal intensive care units.
The Retina department at Magruder Eye utilizes the most advanced technology including digital fluorescein angiography, Optical Coherence Topography, Photodynamic Therapy.
Dr. Lehr and his team have participated in over 13 nationally recognized clinical trials with Dr Lehr servering as the Principal Investigator on many of them. These trials haved helped several retinal medications to become utilized for wet macular degeneration, uveitis and diabetic retinopathy.
He is on the active staff of Florida Hospital Systems and the Orlando Regional Health Care systems and is Medical Director of Lakeside Surgery Center.
He is an Associate Clinical Professor at both The Univeristy of Central Florida and Florida State University Medical Schools.
Outside the office, Dr. Lehr has served on multiple not for profit boards. He has been Chairman of Lighthouse Central Florida for the past two years.
