KELLY HERSCHEL, M.D.

Dr. Kelly HerschelDr. Mark Kelland (“Kelly”) Herschel brings over 20 years of surgical experience and an impressive diversity of skills to The Magruder Eye Institute with subspecialty training in four areas of ophthalmology: cataract and refractive surgery, cornea, oculoplastics, and ophthalmic pathology.
After graduating magna cum laude from Vanderbilt University in math and physics, Dr. Herschel received his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma. His interest in ophthalmology began during his pre-residency fellowship in ophthalmic pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Walter Reed Army Hospital, Washington, DC. Founded in 1862, it became one of the premier centers for ophthalmic pathology in the United States. Dr. Herschel completed his residency at the Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation in New Orleans, where in his senior year he served as chief resident. Dr. Herschel continued his training in a two-year cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery fellowship at the Louisiana State University Eye Center in New Orleans. As chief fellow at the Louisiana State University Eye Center, Dr. Herschel coordinated the site’s Stage III FDA clinical trials on myopic photorefractive keratotomy (PRK) and hyperopic PRK. Subsequently, Dr. Herschel joined a prominent practice in Dallas where he practiced comprehensive ophthalmology, focusing on cornea, external disease, anterior segment, and cataract and refractive surgery. He continued performing vision correction procedures after the FDA’s approval of PRK in 1996. Prior to joining The Magruder Eye Institute in 2000, Dr. Herschel completed a fourth fellowship in oculoplastic surgery at Beraja Eye Institute in Miami.
Dr. Herschel practices comprehensive ophthalmology, specializing in laser-assisted refractive cataract surgery, complex cornea surgery, and advanced vision correction procedures. He continues to incorporate new and exciting technologies into his practice including aspheric, toric and multifocal IOLs; laser-assisted femtosecond refractive cataract surgery; and advanced cornea transplant techniques including DSEAK, DALK, and PKP.
As the founder and medical director of Herschel Lasik (www.LasikEyeOrlando.com), Dr. Herschel provides personalized, comprehensive vision correction services to patients from around the world including all laser LASIK, PRK, and Visian ICL.
Dr. Herschel continues to be involved in clinical research; he is currently a Principal Investigator on a multi-center Stage III FDA clinical trial on corneal collagen cross-linking in patients with keratoconus or corneal ectasia.
Dr. Herschel is board certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Medical Association.
