RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA

Retinitis pigmentosa is an eye disease in which the retina has been damaged. Photoreceptor cells that are responsible for controlling night vision, also referred to as rods and cones, are mostly affected. It’s a type of progressive dystrophy that leads to visual loss.

The main symptom of this eye disease is the presence of dark deposits in the retina. Other symptoms can include decreased vision at night or in low light, loss of peripheral vision, and loss of central vision.

Although there is no effective treatment for this condition, wearing sunglasses can help protect the retina because it can protect the eyes from ultraviolet light which can preserve vision. Antioxidant vitamins like vitamin A can also help be helpful in preserving site. Genetic testing can help determine whether your children are at risk for this disease.

Talk to an ophthalmologist at Mugruder Eye Institute if you are experiencing some of the symptoms listed above.
