Orlando Ophthalmologist Michael P. Graham, MD

On a typical day, you might find Dr. Michael Graham doing what he knows best and that is helping people throughout Central Florida see better. What you might not know, however, is that his passion for helping people started in a research facility on Long Island in New York, far away from the crowds of people.

“It’s kind of odd that I went to Medical School to become a research scientist,” recalls Dr. Graham. “But, I decided that I liked people more than I liked beakers. I sort of let that dream go and fell in love with the idea of being an ophthalmologist and help people improve the quality of life.”

Dr. Graham grew up in Northwest New Jersey where his love of science was met with a knack for “fixing things.”

“It’s no secret that I have had some hobbies over the years,” admits Dr. Graham. “I’ve done woodworking, photography, playing guitar, you name it. I was even named runner-up for Florida amateur beer brewer of the year for three years in a row!”

Dr. Graham’s lasting relationships with his patients make coming to work a breeze every day.

“I get to know them, their families, and their history.” explains Dr. Graham. “Many of my patients have really done it all in life and share their stories with me. I’m always fascinated by their stories and I’m more than thrilled to provide the right atmosphere for them to come in and relax. Even though this is a serious place, we still want to go through the day with smiles on our faces.”

Dr. Graham is a General Ophthalmologist specializing in Cataract Microsurgery, Anterior Segment Diseases and Surgery, and Glaucoma Laser Surgery.  His initial interest in research has resurfaced as he is now involved in clinical research in developing new intraocular lens technology, as well as trials of new medications for cataract surgery, dry eyes, and glaucoma.

Dr. Graham earned his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Virginia, where he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He went on to Medical School at the State University of New York at Stoney Brook. During his time there, he was involved in research at Cold Spring Harbor laboratories. He received his medical degree with distinction and moved on to an internship in Internal Medicine at Winthrop University Hospital in New York to be followed by a residency at the State University of New York Health Science Center in Syracuse.  Dr. Graham is still with his first full-time practice, Magruder Eye Institute. His love of Florida led him to one of the most comprehensive practices in the area.

“I sent my resume to every Ophthalmology practice in Central and South Florida,” he recalls. “I absolutely love the area and love the weather and when I became part of a cutting edge practice like Magruder Eye Institute, I knew I had found the right place for me,” he says with a smile, “My wife, Celia and my two sons are proud to call the Orlando area home. I am blessed to have this opportunity and I am very thankful to be able to do this for a living.”

When Dr. Graham is not enjoying his time with his patients, he’s typically doing various hobbies like fishing, boating, or hiking.
